To
the Editors, The
current regime in Saudi Arabia stands in opposition to democratic
elections, equal opportunity for women, fair and open trials, human rights
protections, and the freedoms of speech, assembly, and religion. The
United States should withdraw our troops from Saudi Arabia to oppose that
backward monarchy and to reduce the numbers of well-funded Saudi
terrorists. Without
hope of peacefully replacing their leadership, Saudi subjects attack the
power that upholds that regime: the United States. While allied to
the government, the U.S. cannot confront Saudi Arabia, no matter how often
Saudi Arabians attack us. Since
there's an apparent military victory in Afghanistan, withdrawing from
Saudi Arabia now would not be interpreted as weakness. Currently,
we're on the same road we trod with the Shah of Iran and Ferdinand Marcos
of the Philippines. At some point those two dictatorships became so
unpopular with their people that they could no longer do what some in the
US government wanted. The House of Saud has reached that point. Begin
the development of freedom and democracy in Saudi Arabia. Bring our troops
home. Sincerely, Alfred Molison
